The breeze gently blew, beckoning strands of my hair to dance; making even the most coarse and curly clusters gracefully tango. My location: Biscayne Bay, on a boat headed back to shore from Elliot Key. Although my departure was not nearly as merry as my arrival, it was equally as beautiful. This small island held so much beauty, enlightenment, challenges and adventure. This is the PERFECT fieldtrip destination, and I would truly love to return to the island.
As soon as my group of campers arrived to Biscayne National Park whispering foreshadows of what type of endurance we would need to persevere though the trip began to present its self in various ways. We created a fire line and, one by one, passes down each bag/suitcase each camper had brought and loaded it onto the a boat. after all luggage was boarded we stopped to rest on the concrete wall which lined the docking area. Then, strapping on secure life vests we to boarded the medium sized speed boat and chose our seats. Once we took off, the intensity of the blazing sun and the throbbing of my worn out arms didn’t matter. The oceans aroma soothed my aches and the dolphins seemed to have carried away the sun with the sound of their splashes by our sides. Immediately we were ambushed by a fleet of mosquitoes and knats. We held our heads high and placed our best foot forward, for with the busy world behind and a sense of faith and freedom in front of us, nothing could strip away our joy. Our adventure had begun.
The next day our six groups of five unzipped the tents we had set up, groomed, grabbed a quick breakfast and headed up to the lab shack. Here, we were taught a lot of what seemed to be scientific phenomenon’s to us. Coral reefs, Chimaera, Viperfish, Sea Slugs… All these “new” oceanic life and ways we never fathomed. we then broke up into smaller groups and worked on several packets chucked full of information and questions such as: a star fish has the ability to grow another limb if one is to be removed, and the removed limb will eventually grow into a new starfish.” and “a mother clownfish has small eyes while the fat5her has large eyes. if the mother lays 300 eggs at one time, how many fries will have small eyes?”. The work, although complicated and confusing, presented its self as an intriguing opportunity to acquire knowledge.
After we completed all of our curricular work it was time to move on to the physical work. each tent group was assigned kitchen duties which rotated each meal: gathering , cooking, serving, washing, drying, and, cleaning the picnic area were our chores. we then suited up and jumped in the sea with our life jackets and magnifying-buckets to go Sea Creature water wading. here came across several fascinating creatures such as shrimp, slugs, fish, crabs, etc. showering was another undesirable job which was to be accomplished, not because we were plain gross but because the showers were cold and minute. those who followed through with this task were praised and named “Mighty Man/Girl”. The next day (our last night) our ranger, Cris, (or as you may have called him Crocodile Cris, for each camper was given an animal name) drew us out of our tents after the sun had set. he then set up a game in which you wee blind folded under the supervision of our teachers and sent out to find a partner who called out the same word you did by walking around a small area.(this had been one of many odd games Cris set up for us. the day before we were to do a scavenger hunt across the entire camping area using nothing but a compos and a set of directions.) then we embarked on something he called a Night Hike. here we walked thought the woods holding each others hands. the only problem being that is was a new moon, so that path we walked down was not lit like it usually was, meaning we had to trust in our senses ENTIRELY. we walked a good twenty feet to the woods, then were separated five feet from each other holding on to a taught rope and continued to walk. It wasn’t until one reached the end of the rope that they were told that they were to walk the rest of the way on their own. this scared the living skin off of me, and after a two second encouragement speech I was set off into the darkness to find my way. blindly I walled, swaying from any grassed areas which indicated that I walked off of the path. finally I saw a glowing orangey red light up a head. in an instant I dashed towards it, the lyrics of a gospel song still stumbling out of the craves of my moth. a camp fire set the glow, and the students who had made it to the sight be fore I applauded me for making it as well as every other student who followed in a sigh of relief. once all accomplished the walk we were rewarded with the privilege of making smores over the open fire. stories were told songs were sand and over all it was a glorious night, even though the rain on the short cut back to our tents.
Awakened by the sound of a conch shell blown by ranger cris at five am we set out to another close by dock to create post cards of the beautiful sunrise to send home to our families. breakfast was eaten, tents were dismantled and before we knew it we were back of the speed boat headed to shore. like said Although my departure was not nearly as merry as my arrival, it was equally as beautiful. the trip to Elliot key was the best field trip I had ever ventured to, and even though it’ll take a heck of a lot out of a person, it was totally worth it. Twas on that boat ride home that I realized I could truly live the life style of that island with no regrets once so ever. This was my home away from home, and that is why I would love to go on a field trip to this majestic location. -NIkiLoww
