Love Work Family Friends Games Kids Life

This is going to be very random, but it is bothering me. I loved the movie Pocahontas as a child, and I still do. I cry at the end every time, as a grown woman. But damn, could it be any more offensive? The persistent racism and sexism so sneakily embedded in the film does nothing but harm. I think that the story would be better if it was fantasy, rather than making an attempt at history. History is too messy to be handled in a children’s film. There would be no way to show a 10 year old girl being kidnapped by the English and then married off and taken to England without her consent. She died at 18, people. This is some pretty upsetting s***. And the movie tries to make both parties at fault, but really, who was invading whom? It is not as if the Native peoples (who are not, as the movie portrays, one group, but many) were asking to be a part of English society. England invaded. That is that. The movie is visually stunning and the music is lovely, but it is painful to watch. I just thought that I would share this thought, as it is bothering me quite a bit. Despite my better judgement, I still love this movie to the point where its issues make me acutely uncomfortable.
Thank you for your time.
