But I’m Breathless

Sometimes, I feel like all I need to do is stand on top of something and shout in my loudest voice:
CAN ANYONE AT ALL HEAR ME?!
What’s it like to make a change, to make a difference?
I’m going into my final year of high school in a few days, and to be completely honest, that scares the living buggery out of me. Mainly because I’ve gone through seventeen whole years of life without making a dramatic difference.
I haven’t ever done anything especially worthwhile. What’s it like to change someone’s life? I don’t mean to become their friend, or to fall in love… I mean, what’s it like to know that you helped a child, who was once starving? What’s it like to pick someone up off the pavement, and know that they’ll keep on trying? What’s it like to see someone struggling and knowing that you can make a change?
I try and I try, but I’m not making a difference – after all, why would I? I’m just a seventeen-year-old girl from a small suburban town in rural Australia. What kind of difference could I make, anyway? I feel trapped – not by my town, or by the limitations of age. I’m trapped by me. How can I be more?
How can I be heard?
How can I hear others?
