The Plesiosauria or plesiosaurs are an order or clade of extinct Mesozoic marine reptiles, belonging to the Sauropterygia. Plesiosaurs first appeared in the latest Triassic Period, possibly in the Rhaetian stage, about 203 million years ago. Based on underwater photographs and sonar, co-authors Robert Rines and Sir Peter Scott named the creature Nessiteras rhombopteryx. That basically translates to "Ness monster with diamond [-shaped] fins." Scott argued that it was necessary to give a scientifically legitimizing name to the creature because of a new conservation law in the U.K. The Loch Ness Monster (once given the scientific name Nessiteras rhombopteryx based off an alleged photo; now considered dubious) is a cryptid beast that was first brought to the world's attention in 1933, though historical writings from as early as the 6th century have hinted toward the existence of such a creature.
