Ok. Where to begin. Well, I suppose I just wanna express my thoughts on the subject of: EMO. So, when we see that word, we picture something like a teenager, wearing black, with floppy hair, and skinny jeans. No matter who you are, no matter how much you try to tell me that you don’t ‘label’ or ‘stereotype’, that is what comes into your head when you see the word. Well, it is, isn’t it! Now, it’s not a bad thing. Everyone does it. Now, I don’t have any problem whatsoever with people who might be stereotyped as being ’emo’. What I DO have a problem with is the word itself. Emo literally means ’emotional’. So technically, Emo means somebody who is perhaps very emotional or having a tough time in life. That’s what it means. An actual ’emo’ could be that blonde girly girl who loves pink and pop music and nothing to do with what we associate with ’emo’. Whereas that girl with the purple and black hair and the side fringe who likes to wear black and slip knot hoodies and listens to rock music, is absolutely not emo in any way. We need to stop assuming that people like this are emo.

Another thing that annoys me is when ’emo’ people say something along the lines of: emo is not a style, it’s a way of life.

I’m sorry, but it’s not. It’s just not. If you are the sort of person who would typically be described as ’emo’ and have this view, in my opinion, I think it’s wrong. People who enjoy pop music and don’t wear dark clothes and aren’t really described as ’emo’ don’t say that the things they like and the music they listen to is ‘a way of life’. It’s just stuff they like! Emo is not a “way of life” it IS a style and is a style that is perfectly fine and it isn’t bad that there’s a label for it.

I’m really frustrated because I’m finding it difficult to express what I’m trying to say in words, but I guess what I basically mean is, we need to all chill out about this emo crap. We need to take it less seriously. It’s just a ‘thing’ a thing which loads of people like to be like because its them! I just wish people could all be just accepted as who they are, because at the end of the day, everyone’s different, and everyone’s allowed to be.

I would just like to say that self-harming in any way has absolutely nothing to do with being ’emo’. That’s an entire different story.
