The listing space freighter took another hit as it drifted aimlessly through the asteroid belt. Panels were torn off every surface leaving the bare inner workings subject to the subzero temperatures of space. As I looked through the window of the rescue craft, my heart sunk. There was no one left to rescue. I examined the stern closer when I saw something move. That was definitely a human! He looked panicked and I brought up my binoculars while steering the craft in the direction of the survivor.
My ship attempted to connect with his suit’s radio frequency to no avail. I maneuvered my craft carefully through the wreckage and scant asteroids when I saw something that gave me pause. The human had something wrapped around its ankle that he was trying desperately to get rid of. It looked like a life support tube except that it was bucking and jerking the human harder than its pressure should’ve allowed.
The human grabbed an edge of machinery and pulled itself along the ship’s exterior. Along with him came, wrapped around its ankle, some sort of octopus-looking creature with various tentacles reaching for the human. I was close enough now that I could see the human’s panicked expression as he tried to rid himself of this thing. He saw me, widened his eyes and waved his arms at me, signaling me over. I extended my craft’s rescue arm and attempted to move it delicately enough to grab the human.
One of the creature’s many tentacles snapped at the arm and it shattered, scattering fragments of metal and machinery and sending my craft into a wild spin. I tried desperately to cancel the spin but my thrusters failed to fire. Warning lights flared across my control panel and alarms rang through my head. As my window turned to face the human and creature, I could only see the human’s torso and head, as his legs were inside the creature.
I could only watch in horror as my window rotated into position again and again and I watched the creature devour the human in snapshots seen through the glass. After the human had been completely consumed, I stood still thinking about what had just happened. As my window came into position again, the creature leapt from the ship and crashed into my window jarring the ship and cracking the glass.
I ran for the escape pod and struggled with the locking mechanism. As the final turn was completed, the creature’s tentacle burst through the glass and wrapped around my waist. The atmosphere of my craft whooshed out through the small crack and shattered the window, sucking me out with the air. I struggled to breathe as I could feel my inner fluids boiling now exposed to the vacuum of space. The creature was merciful and I could see it’s rows of jagged teeth as it devoured me quickly head-first.
